My cat hasn't pooped in 4 days?
So I noticed my cat was having difficulties defecating about 4 days ago, and took her to the vet yesterday morning. The vet took an X-ray and confirmed that she is constipated. He gave her an enema, but said that he couldn't get the poop out. He gave me Lactulose to give her 3 times a day for a week. So far I've given her two days worth of medications. She still hasn't pooped. I have a follow up appointment for her on Friday. I wanted to know, has anyone else had a similar situation? Also, how long before the Lactulose begins working? I don't have a lot of money as I'm in grad school, but I would gladly go bankrupt trying to get her better. I just don't know what else I can do for her. She cries when she tries to poop it's terrible :( The vet said from the X-ray that it looked like a typical case of constipation and wasn't anything too serious, but I'm worried if she doesn't poop in the next few days that her colon might burst..? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

She could have tumors in her kidneys, if thats the case they need to do surgery right away!

it could be something stuck inside her intestines. Have them check her there because I know someone whose dog had a sock jammed in his intestines and he couldn't get rid of waste.

My advice is to take him/her to vet (again) and get the cat some food with more liquids in it and try to find food with less salt.

Make sure she has plenty of water to drink, try putting down a tablespoon of canned pumpkin-- not pumpkin pie filling, but plain pumpkin (it's fiber). Is she peeing? Do you feel any weird masses in her abdomen? Make sure you pet her and try to make her life easier. Suck it up and go to the vet, and if it ends up expensive, ask about working out a payment plan. My vet was pretty understanding when I had to do one for my cat's surgery.

I really question the vet's credibility, saying that this is a typical case of constipation and isn't anything serious. Constipation IS serious and can even be life-threatening. In my cat's case a few months ago, I didn't know what was wrong with her at first. She was eating and drinking normally, and I was scooping poop from her litter box every day. But one day, she started vomiting and completely lost her appetite. Within a 12-hour period of time, she went from seeming normal to seeming like she was near death! She ended up being hospitalized at a pet hospital and when the doctor told me that she was constipated, I couldn't believe it! First of all, she had been defecating, so constipation didn't even occur to me, but it turned out that she wasn't getting rid of all that she should have. I also had a hard time wrapping my mind around the fact that constipation could cause her to become THAT sick! But according to the way it was explained to me -- backed-up fecal matter can get into the bloodstream and literally cause poisoning. It can also cause the cat's tummy to be so upset that the cat vomits (like mine did), which, in turn, can cause dehydration, and that can cause organ failure and then death. When my cat was being treated, they had to give her two enemas before they got her intestines cleared out, so I'm surprised that your vet didn't try again when one enema didn't work.
So my advice is to take your cat to another vet. And please do it soon!
