What happens next if Laxatives don't work?
I had an X-ray today after my enema didn't stop the pain or releive me. It showed that my colon is full to the brim with stools and the Doctor said that taking a satchet of laxatives 2 times a day was grossly under what it should be, so he's upped the dose to 8 satchets in 1 litre of water to be taken within 6 hours. I've already drunk the whole litre when I got back home. But my question is what if the laxatives don't work? I'm going to give them a chance but I don't feel any change and the pain is still there. It's definately not a bowel obstruction according to the x ray, so if these laxatives don't work (I have to ring up in 48 hours and say how I'm feeling) what is the next step? Would surgery be needed?
Answers:
Dont go to far from the toilet, it might prove embarrassing if you do. They can take time to work, they're not instant.
if u only had a n enema, there are other things u can be given which are much stronger, some u swallow some come up the other end, u might need manual disimpaction(somebody has to stick their finger in your pie hole and do some digging) or they can place a rectal tube to help facilitate passage of the poop
surgery is usually done as a last resort and usually at the point wen your bowels ahve stopped working entriely and it starts causing other problems (nausea, belly pain, fever, low blood pressure to name a few)
