Colon cancer is said to be the most dreadful end result of an unhealthy colon. It is painful and could pose life risks to persons who are undergoing the battle. It may help if you know what cancer is before you know colorectal cancer.
Colon cancer is also known as anal or rectal cancer. It is also often referred to as colorectal cancer. This is said to be the third among the cancer diseases that affect males while for females, this is ranked at number four. This is damaging to tissues and organs found adjacent to the colon.
What is cancer?
Cancer is said to be the mother of all diseases as it has 100 different categories which may inflict anybody. It could be caused by genetics or family history and some may be environmental in nature. It may also be a result of bad eating habits and unhealthy lifestyles.
The common endpoint that all cancer types would affect is the cells of the body. In extreme cases, abnormality in the cells is manifested when it divides even without the body’s need for them to do so. Normally, cells are supposed to be undergoing an orderly process when dividing not through just an outburst. When the negative side affects the body, cancer could be prevalent.
When the cells divide even if there is no need to do so, a mass of tissue could be the result. Science has always said that cells compose tissues, tissues, to organs, organs to system and system to body. From cell formation, tissue formation comes next. This may then lead to the growth of either benign or malignant tumor.
Classifications of tumors
The two classifications of tumors vary as to severity. One may be painful while the other may not be bothersome at all. Here are distinct characteristics of the two.
• Benign. This is not actually a cancer. They can be removed and once these tumors have been out of the body, they will never come back. It does not spread to other body organs thus it is not at all a threat to anybody who has it.
• Malignant. When benign tumors are not addressed immediately it could become malignant. The latter is considered to be cancerous. When you have this, it has a tendency to expand and affect the other tissues and organs of the body. It may even enter into the lympathic system or the bloodstream which will eventually lead to eruptions of tumors elsewhere.
Colon cancer
The colon is where waste materials from food are stored. It is a part of the digestive system which is tubal in form. When tumors grow in the colon, this means that something is wrong with the large intestine. The benign tumors on the large intestine are called polyps while the malignant tumors are referred to as cancers.
While undergoing colonoscopy, polyps may already be removed. However, it is also true that when polyps are not removed, colon cancer begins. In worst cases, colon cancer could spread to other formations in the lung or liver thus leading to cancer in such sites. When metastasis or the spread of the cancer in distant organs occur, it may no longer be cured.
