Facing any cancer type is very difficult. Even if you want to get rid of the disease, you may no longer be able to do it. For colon cancer, knowing the symptoms may help you prepare for the battle as well as prevent it from coming your way.
The symptoms pertaining to colon cancer are not specific at all. It may start from mild conditions such as fatigue, shortness of breath and irregular bowel movements. You may also experience some color changes in your stool, abdominal cramps and bloating.
Symptoms of colon cancer
While it is true that the symptoms of colorectal cancer may be the same as those associated with ordinary colon problems, you still have to know about these ailments. Should you experience any of the following, you are advised to seek medical advice:
1. Irritable bowel syndrome. This condition could be caused by either constipation or diarrhea. It is said that the disease could be linked to any other health problems. However, experts would want to let you know that it could not actually cause colon cancer.
2. Ulcerative colitis. This is another colon problem whose symptoms may be the same with that of colon cancer. It could cause ulcers in the digestive tract and the symptoms include anemia, fatigue, loss of appetite, rectal bleeding and joint pain.
3. Crohn’s disease. This is a disease which makes the digestive tract inflamed. It could affect the mouth of the gastrointestinal tract up to the anus. Its symptoms include abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, weight loss and diarrhea.
4. Diverticulosis. Often referred to as the cause of diverticulitis, diverticulosis is a situation which happens when there are pouches found in the colon particularly in the internal lining. Some may not feel any symptoms of the disease however others complain of abdominal pain, bloating and constipation.
5. Peptic ulcer. While diverticulosis is caused by a pouch in the colon’s internal lining, peptic ulcer is a sore on the lining of the stomach. The ulcer may be either gastric or duodenal. The former is found in the stomach while the latter is located at the duodenum. The symptoms include abdominal pain, weight loss and vomiting.
Other facts on colon cancer symptoms
If you would try to look into the manifestations of the diseases mentioned above, you may find out that most of the patients feel abdominal pain. This is primarily because the digestive system is the breathing ground of these diseases. Any disorder associated with the said system could actually cause lapses in the area thus leading to abdominal pain.
Colon cancer symptoms may not really be seen on a first-hand basis. You may only see it after a long time that it has been there. If you have been diagnosed by your doctor for any of the disorders mentioned above, you should be vigilant enough to pose questions relating to colon cancer. This will prepare you and let you know about what you could expect.
You must also know where the tumor is situated as it may either be in the right colon or left colon. Since the right is wider than the left colon, abdominal symptoms could not be felt immediately. For the left colon on the other hand, you may experience bowel obstruction at the soonest.
