Colonoscopy is one of the most commonly used colon cleansing diagnoses. You have to prepare for the procedure. This will help you know what to expect.
Colonoscopy is a medical procedure that is performed to see and determine the condition of your whole intestinal tract. It is the most common medical process that is done to detect the onset and symptoms of colon or rectum cancer. It is also performed to see the reasons behind the unexplainable transformation in your bowel pattern and to assess what are the causes of your stomach disorder, unexplainable weight loss, and the bleeding of your rectum.
Preparation for Colonoscopy
There are some preparations you will be required to do before the colonoscopy procedure. Your doctor will always extend a handful of help. Some of the things you need to bear in mind are:
• Colon clearance. You will be required to clear your colon from foods. This is to enable the tube with camera to see everything that is necessary for proper diagnosis. Your doctor will advise you to maintain a liquid diet one or three days before the procedure. The fluid that you should take-in must be clear and must not contain any food colorings or preservatives.
• Bowel cleansing. Before the colonoscopy procedure you must undergo a comprehensive bowel cleansing. Your doctor may require you to take-in a laxative on the night before the process. In some cases, enema is performed, especially if you have not cleansed your bowel properly. You must see inform your doctor about the medical conditions and medications you have to avoid any possibilities of complication.
• Medical condition. You should also inform your physician if you have a current problem on your heart or lungs so that you may be given a special attention. Since you will be sedated during the process, it is necessary that you have somebody with you that will take you home after the procedure.
Procedure
During colonoscopy, you will be required to lie on your left side above the examination table. You will be given a moderate sedative to ensure that you will be comfortable and relaxed during the whole process. Your attending physician and his staff will make sure that all your vital signs are normal, and they will see to it that you are at the most comfortable position.
When you are already comfortable and relaxed, the doctor will insert the colonoscope into your rectum. He will then direct it gradually to your colon. The equipment will send out the image of your colon to the video screen to help your doctor determine your colon walls. Since the colonoscope is flexible, he will be able to bend and move it around the arch of your colon.
During the procedure your doctor may ask you to change positions so that he can easily view the different parts your colon. The colonoscope has an air that inflates your colon. Since you are moderately sedated during the procedure, you will most likely not remember what happened after the colonoscopy.
Colonoscopy will not only determine the causes and symptoms of your colon’s condition but it can also help in removing a lot of irregular growths in your colon. You have to undergo this procedure to lighten your burden. You need not be afraid for it could definitely lead you to all the answers you want.
