What is bowel obstruction? What are the causes and symptoms of this disease which associates it with the colon problem? How could it be diagnosed to come up with the proper treatment?
Bowel obstruction is a fractional or total obstruction in your intestines that inhibits gas, liquid, or hardened materials to move freely and normally inside your intestines. The obstruction can happen both in your large and small intestines. If there is a serious case of bowel obstruction, your blood supply can be disconnected, that may result to bowel strangulation which is considered an emergency situation.
Causes
The most common cause of bowel obstruction is a growth of tumors, distortion of your intestines, or lesions in the tissue. These are often termed as mechanical obstructions. This type of bowel condition may also be due to hernia, crohn’s disease, and cancer. One of the least causes of this condition is serious constipation.
Symptoms
The symptoms of bowel obstruction include painful abdominal contraction that may become serious if the supply of the blood in your intestine is strangulated. You will also feel nauseated and stomach bloating. If both your small and large intestines are partially obstructed, you will suffer frequent loose bowel elimination. However, if it is totally strangulated, you will experience constipation and the gas that comes out of your body will also be affected.
Diagnosis
The diagnosis of bowel obstruction will depend on whether the blockage is in the small or large intestines. Your doctor will determine your condition through physical examinations and some laboratory tests. During the physical examination, he will ask you some important questions in order to help him determine what causes your condition.
Your bowel obstruction condition will also depend on the various kinds of symptoms that you are experiencing. Diagnosis is very important for this condition to avoid further complications that may occur, especially cancer and growth of tumors inside your intestinal tract.
Treatment
If you have a partially obstructed small or large intestine, the treatment is done in the hospital. Your condition will be monitored round the clock to make sure that you are comfortable and whether the obstruction will disappear on its own.
Fluid intake will be prohibited, but you do not have to worry about being thirsty. This is because you will be given fluids intravenously to make sure that your blood pressure will be at its normal level and to prevent insufficient supply of fluids in your body. A thin tube may also be inserted from your nose down to your stomach to eliminate the liquid and gas that can cause severe abdominal pain and heaviness.
Incomplete bowel barrier is usually treated through enemas, small mesh tubes, or medicines that will open the passageway of the wastes. Surgery is only required if you have a total bowel blockage in your small and large intestines, or when your blood supply is disconnected. This type of bowel condition can recur if not treated properly and immediately.
Bowel obstruction as associated with the colon cleansing procedure is very obvious. This condition could lead to colon cancer when not treated with the process. Likewise, when colon cleansing is not present, you may also have bowel obstruction in your body.
