Diverticulitis: Three Dietary Recommendations For Treating The Disease

Diverticulitis is a severe form of diverticulosis. You could get a lot of complications from this disease. To avoid anything drastic to happen in the future, you may take in dietary recommendations or other treatments.

Diverticulitis results from thinning of the sacs found in the digestive system.  Once these sacs rupture, fluids will proceed to your colon walls and bacteria will start spreading around.  Once you feel chills, fever, nausea, tenderness in the left side of the abdomen and constipation, you should have yourself diagnosed.

Complications from diverticulitis and how to diagnose them

The complications you could have from this disease may vary as to how severe your case is.  The most common results you could see are bleeding, abscesses, fistulas, peritonitis, perforation and other intestinal obstructions.  All of these things are bothersome effects of diverticulitis, thus you need to go for immediate diagnosis.  Diagnoses which could detect the problem include colonoscopy, Barium X-ray and sigmoidoscopy.

Dietary recommendations for diverticulitis

To help you treat the disease once you are diagnosed that you have it, you should follow some dietary recommendations.  These things will help you attain better health not only for your colon but for your entire body as well.  Here are three things that you need to do:

1. Increase fiber intake.  A colon cleansing program is always supported by fiber intake.  You have to do this to prevent diverticulitis as well.  Supplement the program by taking fiber supplements.  It is said that a dietary supplement containing psyllium could be of great help.  This is a substitute to high-fiber foods which could lead you to tendencies of producing more gas.

2. Increase water intake.  As you are cleansing your system, you might be dehydrated.  You should then increase your water intake.  An effective way of doing this is to consider your body weight.  It is recommended that you should take water an amount which is at least half of your body weight in ounces.  If you cannot stand drinking water the whole day in the particular amount, you may take juices and teas.  As much as possible, avoid drinking tap water since they contain toxic materials that could be of harm to your colon.

3. Colon maintenance.  Two ways of maintaining a healthy colon is through colonic irrigation or through herbal supplements.  These techniques could virtually remove the wastes that have built-up in your system.  Once you have effectively seen results, you will notice that you will be energized.  This is because you are given the capacity to absorb the nutrients from the food you take in.

Misconceptions on food intake when you have diverticulitis

There are myths that some foods are not good for diverticulitis such as small seeds, grains, lettuce and other vegetables and fruits which are high in fiber content.  According to some, they may bring discomfort or even inflammation on the sacs.  However, this is not at all true.  Different bodies may react differently with the kind of food taken in.  Doing things on trial and error could be of great help.

Aside from dietary modifications, you could always have exercise to help you recover from diverticulitis.  Medications may also be given to you by your doctor to at least lessen the burden.  The important thing you should take note of is to act immediately not when you have the luxury of time to do so.
